Brickin’ it
The last fortnight since returning from Wales has passed in a blur, with work and family leaving little time or energy for model making. There have been opportunities to get up in to the attic, switch Wheal Ponder on and run a few trains on more than one occasion.
Operating Wheal Ponder has a regular pattern about it, though I am keen to vary operation a bit, as the real railway would have done and a thought occurred during one of these operating sessions of a small modelling job that could help this.
My original intention with Wheal Ponder was to use the different Chivers four wheel wagons, with the two plank version being used for brick traffic. These ended up being used for China Clay traffic and I built a couple of Port Wynnstay single plank waggons and knocked up a quick brick load for them. The thought occurred that by making a brick load for the Chivers wagon, I could add a bit more variety to the operation and also give the Ruston more than just one wagon to haul.
Yesterday evening I sat down and within a couple of hours, the load was made. A base for the load to fit inside the wagon was cut out of thick cardboard, a piece of scrap hard back book binding board that once arrived as packaging in a Wild Swan book order and seemed too good to be thrown away was quickly cut to size.
Underneath, four strips of styrene strip were glued to bring the height up to fill the wagon.
Then came the laborious part, aided by a couple of beers and Zooming with some fellow NG7 modellers, a packet of 7mm scale sized bricks was opened and each one was glued on to the card base.
Left to dry overnight, the load was taken for a test run this afternoon. With Kerr Stuart Skylark ‘Princess’ providing the motive power, allowing a different operation to run than I’d managed before.
Come to think of it, just need to build two more Chivers wagons and I could add a second goods train to the roster….. Whilst I check the kit stock drawer, here’s some more photos of Princess bothering those wagons.
