Been a couple of wagon additions at Wheal Ponder this week…
When I exhibited at Burton in June, it is fair to say that the neighbouring layout with its Mallard ducks, eggs and horizontal kilt wearing self propelled wagon (Flying Scotsman) was quite a big hit with the children, including my own.
It has also been suggested to me that the donkeys on the layout could do with a unicorn friend or two and that unicorns travel in rainbow coloured wagons.
All good railway companies, no matter how big or small should listen to their customers and act accordingly and this is no exception.
The wagon is a Port Wynnstay resin kit of a Welshpool & Llanfair sheep wagon on a Parkside oo kit wagon chassis, a straight forward kit build. The painting formed a useful test bed for painting rolling stock in acrylic paints rather than enamels and I’m pleased to say it’s a success that will be repeated.
Having been very secretive whilst I’ve built and painted this wagon, this morning it was revealed and prompted a very enjoyable operating session on the layout.
The wagon has been a great hit. Whilst I’m sure that such frivolity will upset the purists, I’m sure the unicorn wagon will accompany the layout to exhibitions to be deployed when either young children or boorish pedants are in attendance.
The second addition is a granite sett load for the low sided wagons to improve their versatility but that isn’t nearly as photogenic!
